The flood in 1962 destroyed large parts of Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg and primarily killed poor migrant workers who lived directly behind and on the dike. Today, this land is home to the “wild forest,” which is once again a gathering place for marginalized communities and many forms of non-human life displaced from the city center.
As of 2018, the dikes in Wilhelmsburg were increased to cope with rising sea levels and the deepening of the Elbe. This is in line with the city’s construction plans, which include the leveling of the “wild forest”.

The installation Sprung über die Elbe (leaping over the Elbe river) is based on a long-term engagement with the communities in and around the forest as well as an interest in the material reality of its non-human inhabitants. The title is borrowed from the construction company IBA Hamburg, which is responsible for urban planning in Wilhelmsburg. For this installation, the slogan can be understood as a counter-movement – the anarchic ecology of the forest is brought into the city center.
