relational movement study II

installation of helium ballons connected to piezo microphones
in a room without window panes

The room of the installation had its window panes removed, leaving it permanently open for the winter wind. The door of the room was changed to close automatically. Whenever it was opened a cold wind blew towards the entering visitors. The wind also set the helium balloons in movement, which were floating in the center of the room.

The balloons are tied to a network of copper cables which leads to a  speaker on one end and to piezo microphones on its many tips. Setting the balloons in movement the microphones gently scratch and knock on the floor. This happens most strongly through the wind whenever the door is opened, but also through people’s movement in the exhibition space, their body temperature and electricity.
The airflow creates a pure, unfiltered soundscape which does not only translate the path of the balloons into sound but is also a sensual, tentacular mapping of the uneven ground of the exhibition space and peoples movement through it.
